Airtel moves to restructure company, lays off staff

Airtel Nigeria announced earlier this week that it has sacked some of its employees as part of a corporate restructuring move by the company. The company did not however disclose how many people were affected by the move.

Additional reports from other media sources stated that the affected staff were well compensated with three months’ salary in-lieu of notice in addition to one month’s pay for every year they have worked with the company.

Airtel Nigeria’s director of Corporate Communications, Emeka Opara was quoted in the Punch News Paper as saying “One of the objectives (of the move) is to create a high performing organization, which satisfies the needs of all our stakeholders, especially our customers as we step into the next growth phase of our organization.”

Bharti Airtel is also currently in concluding talks with Orange SA, a French telecommunications company, to sell off its subsidiaries in Congo Brazzaville, Chad, Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso for $1 billion. This move  sources say is to help the company further consolidate its investments in Nigeria.
