You just got a shiny new phone. You’re excited, setting things up, and then it hits you. Your WhatsApp chats. Years of group conversations, voice notes from family, receipts and contracts shared over DM, and those priceless back-and-forth threads with people you care about. All of it sitting on your old device.
It’s one of the most common fears people have when switching phones, and honestly, it’s a valid one. WhatsApp does not automatically move your messages to a new device the way your photos might sync to the cloud. If you don’t handle it correctly, you could lose everything.
The good news? You don’t have to. This guide walks you through every reliable method for transferring WhatsApp to a new phone, whether you’re moving from Android to Android, iPhone to iPhone, or switching platforms entirely. Step by step, no tech jargon, no confusion.
Why WhatsApp Chats Don’t Transfer Automatically
Here’s something most people don’t realise: WhatsApp does not store your messages on its servers after they’ve been delivered. Once a message lands on your phone, it lives there. Not in the cloud, not on WhatsApp’s end. This is actually part of what makes WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted and private.
The flip side is that when you switch phones, those messages don’t follow you automatically. You need to either back them up to a cloud service (Google Drive for Android, iCloud for iPhone) or use a direct device-to-device transfer method. Skip this step, and your chat history stays behind on the old phone.
The method you use depends largely on what kind of phones you’re moving between. Let’s break it down.
Method 1: Android to Android Transfer Using Google Drive
This is the simplest and most common scenario. If you’re moving from one Android phone to another, Google Drive has you covered.
On your old Android phone:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots in the top right corner
- Go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup
- Tap Back Up to Google Drive and select a frequency (or tap “Back Up Now” for an immediate backup)
- Make sure you’re signed into a Google account and connected to Wi-Fi
- Wait for the backup to complete. This can take a few minutes depending on how much media you have
On your new Android phone:
- Install WhatsApp from the Google Play Store
- Verify your phone number (use the same number linked to your old account)
- When prompted, sign into the same Google account
- WhatsApp will detect your backup automatically. Tap Restore
- Wait for the restore to finish, and your chats will be right there
That’s it. Clean and straightforward.
Method 2: iPhone to iPhone Transfer Using iCloud
If you’re upgrading from one iPhone to another, the process is just as smooth. Just swap Google Drive for iCloud.
On your old iPhone:
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup
- Tap Back Up Now to create a fresh backup to iCloud
- Wait until the backup completes fully before setting up your new phone
On your new iPhone:
- Download WhatsApp from the App Store
- Verify your phone number
- When asked if you want to restore from iCloud, tap Restore Chat History
- Wait for it to complete
One thing to keep in mind: your iCloud account must have enough free storage space to hold the backup. If you’re running low on space, you may need to manage your iCloud storage or purchase more before proceeding.
Method 3: Android to iPhone Using the “Move to iOS” App
This one trips a lot of people up. Google Drive backups and iCloud backups are not cross-compatible. You can’t restore an Android backup on an iPhone and vice versa. But WhatsApp has an official solution for this, and it works well when done right.
What you need:
- Your iPhone must be in setup mode (freshly reset or brand new, not already in use)
- Both phones should be on the same Wi-Fi network or the iPhone acting as a hotspot
Steps:
- Download the Move to iOS app on your Android phone from Google Play
- On your new iPhone, go through the setup screens until you see Move Data from Android
- Tap it, and a code will appear on your iPhone screen
- Open Move to iOS on your Android, tap Continue, and enter the code
- Select WhatsApp from the list of data to transfer
- Follow the on-screen prompts. WhatsApp will guide you through the rest
- Once the transfer completes, verify your number on the iPhone and restore your chats
A word of caution: if you skip this during the initial iPhone setup and start using your new iPhone first, you’ll need to reset it before this method will work. Apple’s tool only runs during the setup process.
Method 4: iPhone to Android Using a QR Code or Cable
Moving from iPhone to Android is a bit more involved, but WhatsApp now supports it officially.
- On your iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Move Chats to Android
- Follow the on-screen prompts, which will generate a QR code
- On your new Android phone, open WhatsApp during setup and scan the QR code
- Both devices need to remain connected (either via USB cable or on the same Wi-Fi network) until the transfer is complete
- Verify your phone number on the Android device once done
This method transfers your messages, media, and most settings directly between the two devices. No cloud required.
Method 5: Using the WhatsApp QR Code Transfer (Android to Android)
WhatsApp also added a QR-based transfer feature for moving between two Android phones directly, which is useful when cloud backups aren’t an option.
- On your old Android phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Transfer Chats
- Tap Start and a QR code will appear
- On your new Android phone, open WhatsApp and scan that QR code when prompted during setup
- Keep both phones close together with Wi-Fi enabled until the transfer completes
Both devices need to be running Android 5.1 (Lollipop) or higher for this to work.
What Happens If You Never Made a Backup?
Don’t panic. If your old phone is still accessible and turned on, all hope is not lost.
WhatsApp stores local backups directly on your phone’s internal storage. You can locate the WhatsApp folder on your Android device, copy it to a computer, and then paste it to your new phone before reinstalling the app. When WhatsApp launches and detects the local backup, it will offer to restore from it.
For iPhones, you can also restore from a local backup via iTunes or Finder on your Mac or PC.
Important Things to Keep in Mind
- Use the same phone number. WhatsApp ties your chat history to your phone number. If you switch to a new number without doing a proper transfer, you won’t be able to restore your old chats.
- Back up before you wipe. Always confirm that your backup completed successfully before powering off or resetting your old phone.
- Group chats transfer too. You’ll automatically rejoin active groups, but admin rights and custom notification settings will need to be reset manually.
- Deleted messages don’t come back. Backups only include messages that existed on your phone at the time the backup was created. Permanently deleted chats are gone for good.
- WhatsApp Business accounts are handled separately and may require extra steps depending on the device you’re moving to.
Switching phones used to feel like a gamble when it came to WhatsApp. These days, you have multiple solid options, whether you’re staying on the same platform or crossing between Android and iPhone. The key is always the same: back up before you switch, use the same phone number, and follow the steps in order.
Whether you’re restoring from Google Drive or iCloud, using the Move to iOS app, or doing a direct QR transfer, your chats, photos, voice notes, and memories can make the move with you, completely intact.
