Nigerian government set to resume negotiations with MTN

Following its confirmation of the payment of NGN50 billion by telecoms company MTN, the Nigerian government has said it will start new talks with the operator “very soon” to settle a dispute over the $3.9 billion fine.

Communications minister, Adebayo Shittu, said the final decision on the matter would be made by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari.

“It is (now) for government to meet with them and conclude negotiations,” Shittu told Reuters on Wednesday.

It would be recalled that TechCity reported last week that MTN announced it had withdrawn a lawsuit against Nigeria over the original $5.2 billion fine it incurred after it failed to disconnect lines with incomplete registration details.
