Meta has officially launched a dedicated WhatsApp for iPad app more than 15 years after the messaging service and Apple’s first iPad hit the market.
Available now via the App Store, the iPad app brings much of the same functionality users are already familiar with on iPhones, including the ability to make audio and video calls with up to 32 people, use the front and rear cameras, and share screens during calls.
Designed for Multitasking and Bigger Screens
Built to take full advantage of iPadOS features, the new app supports Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over, allowing users to multitask seamlessly. That means you can keep your WhatsApp chats open on one side of the screen while browsing the web or watching videos on the other making it far more convenient than toggling between apps on smaller devices.
Until now, iPad users had to rely on the WhatsApp Web version in browsers or use desktop apps for Mac or PC to access the platform. The lack of a native iPad app has long been a frustration for users, despite growing demand.
A Long-Awaited Launch
Back in 2022, WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart acknowledged that the company would “love” to create a native iPad experience, citing the overwhelming interest from users. This week, WhatsApp teased the arrival of the app on X (formerly Twitter) with a cryptic eyes emoji, hinting at its long-awaited debut.
Although Meta has remained quiet about a possible Instagram for iPad, rumors suggest that the company may soon bring other popular apps to Apple’s tablet ecosystem.
A Win for Productivity-Focused Users
The launch of WhatsApp for iPad signals Meta’s growing focus on optimizing its products for productivity and cross-device flexibility. With support for multitasking features and large-scale video calls, the app is a strong fit for users who want richer communication tools on bigger screens whether for work, school, or staying connected with friends and family.
As WhatsApp continues to evolve across devices, iPad users finally have a native experience to match their expectations.
