SMWLagos: Omawumi, other Nigeria’s music superstars share advice on social media strategy

One of Nigeria’s major female artistes and first runner up in the maiden edition of West African Idol, Omawumi, has advised musicians and other artistes to have a holistic social media strategy to promote their works. She said this while speaking on a panel at the ongoing Social Media Week in Lagos.

According to her, artistes that don’t know much about tech should engage the services of professionals in setting up their social media platforms.

In his remark, Nigeria’s most popular DJ, Jimmy Jatt, said while social media has lots of potentials for artists and DJs, indices such as the number of favorites and retweets on Twitter don’t necessarily translate to reach since not everyone that retweets take time to read the message in the tweet.

“I found out some people will just retweet anything I post without even taking time to click the link. It is a great shortcoming and this is why you find artists not relying entirely on social media, we are using other mediums in addition,” he said.

Also speaking yesterday at the panel, popular rapper, M.I said choosing between television or internet would be determined by the purpose – what the artist wants to achieve.

“You need to decide whether you want promotion or monetization,” he said.

According to him, it is now possible for an artist to achieve both.
