PiggyVest, Paga, Flutterwave, others win Techpoint Awards

To complement its Techpoint Build 2021, Techpoint held a 3-day event that hosted startups innovators, policymakers, investors, and tech enthusiasts to discuss and celebrate the evolution of technology in Africa. 

The big catch of the event was the award ceremony for startups in various categories namely; financial inclusion, mobility and logistics, edtech, and electronic payments. Before now, Techpoint had put out a call asking the public to nominate outstanding startups in the aforementioned categories. Below is the list of winners in various categories;

1. Most Outstanding Financial Inclusion Company 2021 – Paga

Paga is becoming a leader in promoting financial inclusion in Nigeria. 

2. Most Outstanding Mobility & Logistics Company 2021 – GIGL

God is Good Logistics (GIGL) builds mobility and logistics solutions in Nigeria.

3. Most Outstanding Electronic Payments Company 2021 – Flutterwave

Flutterwave has made efforts to accelerate Africa’s payment infrastructure. It attained its unicorn status in 2021.

4. Most Outstanding Education Company 2021– uLesson

Edtech witnessed the rise of uLesson, a startup company that provides educational lessons for secondary schools in West Africa.

 

5. Most Outstanding Crypto Exchange 2021 – Patricia 

Patrica survived the ban on cryptocurrency by creating an alternative for crypto exchange. It was founded by Hanu Fejiro.

6. Most Outstanding Alternative Use of the Blockchain 2021 – Xend Finance

Xend Finance provides an alternative for users to use the blockchain for saving. The company raised about $2.2 million from Google Launchpad, Binance, and other investors.

7. Most Outstanding Healthtech Company 2021 – 54gene 

54gene is known for its innovation of building solutions related to healthcare. Recently, the startup company launched a diagnostic solution for users called 7RiversLab

8. Most Outstanding Marketplace Company – Arteasy Nigeria

Arteasy is a platform that allows Nigerians to buy and sell art supplies.

9. Most Outstanding Agritech Company 2021 – Releaf

10. Newbie of the Year 2021 – Thepeer

Thepeer is the kind of app you call “the middleman.” It was established in 2021, funded by Flutterwave. It is built an infrastructure that allows to companies perform transactions easily. 

Editorial Choice Awards

Also, the event had an Editorial Choice Award. Winners were picked by Techpoint’s editorial team having covered their activities. 

11. Startup of the Year 2021 – Piggyvest

Piggyvest is a fintech app that allows users to save and invest on their smartphones. It reported to have paid N242 billion to its users in 2021

12.  VC of the Year 2021 – Ingressive Capital

Founded by Maya Horgan Famodu, it has funded over 50 startup companies since 2017. Some of them are Paystack, Bamboo, Cova, and Payday.

Audience Choice Awards

Another set of categories was decided by the audience through a voting system, they include

13. Nigerian App of the Year 2021 – Abeg

Abeg app is a fintech startup built by “Nigerians for Nigerians.” It makes payments easy between you and your peers.

14. Tech Influencer of the Year 2021 – Fisayo Fosudo

Fisayo Fosudo is a tech influencer who has a youtube channel where he gives reviews about tech gadgets and tells stories about brands. He has worked with brands such as; Oriamo, and FirstBank.
