OpenAI is taking a major step toward transforming ChatGPT from a standalone chatbot into a full platform. On Wednesday evening, the company officially launched a ChatGPT App Directory, giving users a central place to browse and use tools built directly into ChatGPT. At the same time, OpenAI opened up its Apps SDK, allowing developers to create interactive experiences that work inside ChatGPT’s interface.
This move follows comments from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who said the company plans to build “the obvious features you would expect for a robust platform over time.” Launching an app directory marks one of the biggest shifts yet in how ChatGPT is positioned.
Connectors Are Now Apps
As part of the update, OpenAI has renamed what were previously known as “connectors.” Tools that pulled data from services like Google Drive or Dropbox are now officially called apps.
According to OpenAI:
- Chat connectors are now apps with file search
- Deep research connectors are now apps with deep research
- Synced connectors are now apps with sync
Some apps may also use information from ChatGPT’s Memory feature if it is enabled. For Free, Plus, Go, and Pro users, OpenAI says certain data may be used to train its models if the “improve the model for everyone” setting is turned on.
What the Apps SDK Means for Developers
Developers can now submit apps for review through OpenAI’s developer platform. OpenAI is providing an Apps SDK (currently in beta), alongside design libraries, example projects, and practical documentation to help teams get started.
Once approved, apps can be made available globally or limited to specific countries. The first wave of approved apps is expected to roll out gradually next year.
Apps can be launched directly inside conversations by mentioning them by name or selecting them from the tools menu. OpenAI is also testing features that suggest relevant apps during conversations, based on what the user is trying to do.
Payments, Privacy, and Safety
For now, payments happen outside ChatGPT. Developers can link users to external websites or apps to complete purchases, especially for physical products. OpenAI says it is testing additional payment options and plans to support digital products and subscriptions in the future.
Privacy and safety are central to the rollout. Every app must include a clear privacy policy and request only the data it needs. Users are shown what information will be shared before connecting an app and can disconnect at any time.
Why This Matters
With a built-in app directory now live inside ChatGPT, OpenAI is pushing toward making ChatGPT a central workspace rather than a quick stop for answers. Early use cases include travel booking, music streaming, design tools, and property searches.
As OpenAI puts it, apps allow users to do more inside conversations, from ordering groceries to turning outlines into slide decks, without ever leaving ChatGPT.
