OpenAI has begun rolling out its latest multimodal AI models: GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 Mini to ChatGPT users, bringing significant performance improvements, especially for coding and instruction-based tasks.
Announced on Wednesday, GPT-4.1 is now available to all paid ChatGPT tiers, including Plus, Pro, and Team users. However, free-tier users won’t get access just yet. OpenAI says that Enterprise and Edu users will receive the update in the coming weeks.

What’s New in GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 Mini?
- Improved Performance: OpenAI says GPT-4.1 and 4.1 Mini outperform the older GPT-4o and GPT-4o Mini “across the board,” particularly in code generation and task following.
- Extended Context Window: Both models feature a 1 million token context window, a major leap from GPT-4o’s 128,000-token limit. This means users can work with longer text, code, or multimedia inputs without performance drop-offs.
- Faster Processing: GPT-4.1 is optimized for everyday coding and problem-solving, offering better speed and responsiveness compared to the o3 and o4-mini models introduced in April.
- Model Picker Update: For all users even those on the free plan — GPT-4.1 Mini now replaces GPT-4o Mini as the default model in ChatGPT.
What About GPT-4.1 Nano?
While GPT-4.1 Nano — OpenAI’s smallest and most efficient model was released to developers last month, it was not included in this public rollout. It remains unclear when or if GPT-4.1 Nano will be integrated into ChatGPT.
This latest update marks another major step forward for OpenAI GPT-4.1 ChatGPT users. With better performance, faster speeds, and a much larger token window, these new models are designed to deliver more accurate, responsive, and context-aware results especially for developers and professionals who rely on ChatGPT for technical tasks.
