Nokia 6.1 Plus: A Review

Since Nokia has made a comeback with HMD Global, the company has tried to make face in the mid-range segment.

The Nokia 6.1 Plus is the third in its series. The original Nokia 6 was launched in 2017, making it the first Nokia-branded Android smartphone since the Nokia X2 in 2014. It was then followed by the Nokia 6 (2018) also known as the Nokia 6.1. Now, the Nokia 6.1 Plus comes with upgraded specifications and a new look.

Design and Build

With its edge-to-edge design and sleek body, the Nokia 6.1 Plus is definitely a show-stopper. The build quality and polish in design makes the phone seem more expensive than it actually is.

The device has a front and back glass build – which is nice – but that feature makes it really slippery. Let’s just say HMD sacrificed good grip for great looks. So it’s not one to use without a phone case.
However, the phone does come with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection which can deal with minor falls and scratches well.

There’s an aluminum frame between the glass display on the front and the glass back which also contributes to its sleek look.

The device comes with a finger print scanner just below the camera at the back.

The upper left side houses the SIM tray that can either take two nano SIMs or one nano SIM card and an SD card. The volume rocker and power keys are placed on the upper right side of the device.

The USB-C charging port, and speaker are at the bottom of the phone while the headphone jack is at the top, although I would have preferred it at the bottom.

As for the weight, it is lighter than I expected as it weighs 151 grams.

Display

It features a 5.8 inch (14.73 cm) IPS LCD display with a screen resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels and has a sharp pixel density of 435ppi that ensures a clearer and wider view.

Indoors, display brightness is not an issue but under direct sunlight, the display is barely clear.

Camera

The Nokia 6.1 Plus comes with two rear cameras: 16 MP for the main sensor and 5 MP depth sensor for portrait shots. While the front camera comes with 16MP.
In daylight conditions, the photos are quite alright. Good colours, sharp images and crisp look with a good amount of details.

Outdoor

For low light conditions, it’s a struggle. But then, what mid-range phone is great at taking pictures in low light situations?

Indoor

The device has a ‘Bothie‘ feature that allows you take pictures or videos with both the front and back cameras at the same time. I’m not sure if this feature is exactly useful except in situations where you’re taking a video of your reaction to a particular happening.

Memory and Performance

The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor which is not bad for a mid-range phone – but is not particularly the best.

The Nokia 6.1 Plus comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded with a microSD card.

Battery

With a 3060mAh battery, the Nokia 6.1 Plus serves you well for an entire day on moderate usage. For a regular use, the phone should last for about 8 hours and for heavy use, expect 5 hours. As for charging, it takes about 2 hours to charge the battery from zero to 100 percent.
