National Security Adviser has access to NCC’s SIM registration database

Bashir Idris, the head of Projects Department at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has a direct link to the commission’s SIM registration database claiming it facilitates easy monitoring and apprehension of criminals.

Idris said this while hosting a delegation from the United States Air War College. Justifying this, Idris said the whole essence of the SIM registration exercise was to prevent crimes by monitoring activities of criminals.

So far, 150 million lines have been registered even though the registration into the NCC database is ongoing. Idris also revealed that NCC has strategic partnerships with Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) on its database.

In his remarks,Prof Umar Garba Danbatta, NCC’s executive vice chairman announced the commission is considering collaborative areas with the US War College. For now, the commission said it is considering efforts in fostering cybersecurity.

Speaking to a delegation of students from the US War College in Abuja, Danbatta represented by Tony Ojobo said the NCC is striving to reach its target of ensuring telecoms access within every 5km.
