MTN taps Ericsson for Africa-wide mobile money partnership

Telecoms group MTN has signed a five-year contract with Ericsson for the deployment of new products and the provision of managed services for Mobile Money in 13 countries in Africa and the Middle East.

Details of the deal revealed the new products and services will be deployed via the Ericsson Wallet platform.

Ericsson said this platform which is part of the Ericsson enterprise support systems portfolio enables mobile operators to reuse existing assets and bundle telecommunications offerings with financial services to create a complete solution for end users meeting the needs of mobile commerce.

MTN noted that Ericsson Wallet platform will allow users to keep, transfer and withdraw money, pay merchants and utility providers, and use financial services such as savings and credit.

Serigne Dioum, MTN Group’s mobile financial services director said: “a stable, secure and reliable platform is one of the foundations for creating successful mobile financial services”. “Through this partnership, we hope to work with Ericsson to improve our ecosystem.
