The owners of the popular Mozilla firefox browser have decided to release a cheap smart phone that would cost about ($25) Four thousand Naira only. This development is a product of a partnership between the Firefox company, and a Chinese low cost chip making company named Spreadtrum.

As expected, the phone might not have all the functionality of its high-end counterparts. It will at least be available and affordable to everyone in the society.  The trend at this year’s Mobile World Congress geared towards introducing low cost smartphones designed to target the next big wave of potential users in nations with large low-income populations.

According to Andreas Gal, vice president mobile for Mozilla “Everyone else is trying to make iPhone competitors,” “For example, every release of Android continues to try to compete with the iPhone, so it moves the entire Android ecosystem up in terms of price point. As a result, manufacturers have essentially vacated the space of entry-level priced smartphones.

Despite the fact that its features hover between the smart and feature phones, its accessibility to social media and certain technologies gives it an advantage over the competition.

Indeed, this is a good strategy by the company as it would capture a wide range of people in the developing countries where earning is low. The company emphasized the point that the phone is not meant to compete with the iPhone because of its relatively primary nature.

Whether this will be made available in Nigeria is what we are not so sure about, Well, let’s see how it all goes.
