Mollie to Acquire GoCardless in Deal Aimed at Fixing Recurring Payment Challenges

Dutch financial services provider Mollie has agreed to acquire UK-based bank payment company GoCardless, in a move designed to simplify payments for businesses with recurring revenue models and international operations. The deal is expected to close by mid-2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

The acquisition comes at a time when many businesses, especially SaaS companies and subscription-based platforms, are struggling with fragmented payment systems. Relying heavily on card payments often leads to high transaction fees, failed payments, and customer churn. Mollie believes combining its payment infrastructure with GoCardless’s bank payment network will help solve these challenges.

By bringing GoCardless into its ecosystem, Mollie aims to become a single, scalable payments partner for businesses of all sizes, from small and medium-sized enterprises to large international companies. The combined platform will support card payments, bank payments, and hyperlocal payment methods across multiple markets.

Koen Köppen, CEO of Mollie, said a card-only approach has clear limitations. According to him, failed card payments increase costs and hurt customer retention. He noted that GoCardless has built a strong global bank payment network that directly addresses these issues. “By bringing them into Mollie, we take a huge step towards creating one complete platform for sustainable growth,” Köppen said.

GoCardless co-founder and CEO Hiroki Takeuchi also welcomed the deal, highlighting the benefits of combining expertise across different payment methods. He said the merger would allow both companies to better serve customers, accelerate growth, and raise industry standards.

Once integrated, the combined platform will help businesses reduce payment failures, lower transaction costs, and improve cash flow management. SaaS platforms and vertical software providers using Mollie Connect will be able to embed GoCardless’s bank payment capabilities directly into their products.

Mollie confirmed that local onboarding and support will continue, alongside regional payment methods such as iDEAL in the Netherlands, Satispay in Italy, and Twint in Switzerland. The integration of GoCardless products will be phased, with a strong focus on service continuity and localized customer support.

If completed as planned, the acquisition could strengthen Mollie’s position as a leading payments provider for recurring and cross-border businesses in Europe and beyond.
