OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has publicly criticized Meta’s aggressive efforts to recruit AI researchers revealing that the company, led by Mark Zuckerberg, has offered up to $100 million in signing bonuses to lure talent away from OpenAI.
Speaking on Uncapped, a podcast hosted by his brother Jack Altman, the ChatGPT creator described Meta’s approach as “crazy,” noting that while the company has made bold attempts to hire from OpenAI, “none of our best people have decided to take them up on that.”
Meta, which has faced challenges in maintaining its early lead in open-source AI, is now doubling down on its ambition to build a superintelligence unit. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly taking a hands-on role, personally courting top AI minds across the industry.
In a major move, Meta recently invested $14.3 billion for a 49% stake in Scale AI, a data-labeling startup, valuing it at $29 billion. A key motivation behind the deal, insiders say, was to bring Scale AI’s 28-year-old CEO, Alexandr Wang, onboard to spearhead Meta’s new AI initiatives.
Despite Meta’s deep pockets, Altman questioned whether the company’s culture fosters meaningful innovation. “I respect being aggressive and continuing to try new things. But I don’t think they’re a company that’s great at innovation,” he said. He also implied that OpenAI’s mission-driven environment gives it an edge in talent retention.
“I think we understand a lot of things they don’t,” Altman added, suggesting that culture, not just compensation, is key to building groundbreaking technology.
