Google is expanding the power of its AI assistant with a major update to Gemini Deep Research, allowing it to analyze information from your Gmail, Drive, and Google Chat. The feature, which Google calls “one of our most-requested,” is designed to help users create detailed research reports by drawing from their personal and work data alongside web sources.
A Smarter Way to Research
Gemini Deep Research goes beyond answering questions. It creates a multi-step research plan, performs web searches, and compiles its findings into a structured report. You can then refine the report with extra details or export it directly into a Google Doc and even turn it into an AI-generated podcast.
Google says this integration makes Gemini more useful for complex projects. For example, you could ask it to start a market analysis for a new product by pulling from your brainstorming documents, related email threads, and internal project plans. Similarly, it can produce a competitor report that compares public data with your private company insights and spreadsheets.
How It Works
When using Gemini on desktop, selecting “Deep Research” from the prompt bar gives you four options to choose from:
- Google Search
- Gmail
- Drive
- Chat
Once you select your sources, Gemini uses that context to deliver more personalized and data-rich insights. It can pull from your emails, docs, slides, sheets, PDFs, and chat logs, combining them with real-time web information to produce comprehensive, well-researched results.
Coming Soon to Mobile
Currently, Gemini Deep Research’s integration with Gmail and Drive is only available on desktop. However, Google says that mobile access will begin rolling out in the coming days, making it easier for users to conduct research and generate insights on the go.
This update signals Google’s growing focus on agentic AI, AI tools that can take initiative, perform multi-step tasks, and use personal context to deliver deeper, more relevant answers. With Gemini Deep Research, Google is positioning its AI as a true research assistant for professionals and teams.
