Google ChromeOS 138 Adds Device Sync, Better AI Wallpapers, and Smarter Reading Tools

Google has launched ChromeOS 138, a new version of its Chromebook operating system packed with productivity upgrades and AI-powered features. The update focuses on making it easier to switch between devices, personalize your experience with better AI wallpapers, and simplify technical text with Gemini.

Pick Up Where You Left Off with Desk Sync

One of the standout features of the ChromeOS 138 update is desk sync. If you work across multiple Chromebooks or share devices in a workspace, this feature is designed for you.

When enabled, desk sync automatically saves your open windows, browser tabs, and even cookies—so you can switch from one device to another without losing your progress. It’s especially useful in shared environments like healthcare, hospitality, or education.

How to enable it: Go to ChromeOS Settings > Desk sync.

If you’re using a Chromebook Plus, there’s good news—Google has upgraded the AI wallpaper tool to be more flexible and creative.

Too much creative pressure? The “Inspire Me” button can help by generating prompts and ideas for you.

ChromeOS 138 also introduces more AI tools for productivity and accessibility, especially for Chromebook Plus users. One of them is “Help me read”, which breaks down complex or technical text into simpler language using Gemini.

In addition, all Chromebook users can now:

With desk syncing, better personalization, and smarter AI tools, the ChromeOS 138 update shows Google’s continued push to make Chromebooks more powerful, especially for work and productivity. Whether you’re switching devices, generating wallpapers, or reading technical documents, this update adds features that make everyday tasks easier.
