Dropbox Is Shutting Down Its Password Manager

Dropbox is officially shutting down its password manager, Dropbox Passwords, by October 28, 2025. If you currently use the tool to store login credentials, you’ll need to move your data to a different password manager soon to avoid losing access.

Why Dropbox Passwords Is Shutting Down

Dropbox launched its password manager in 2020 following its acquisition of Valt in 2019. However, the company now says it is discontinuing Dropbox Passwords “as part of our efforts to focus on enhancing other features in our core product.”

While this may be disappointing for users who’ve come to rely on the tool, Dropbox has laid out a timeline to help users transition smoothly.

Shutdown Timeline and What It Means for You

The shutdown will take place in phases:

  • August 28, 2025:
Dropbox Passwords will become view-only on both the mobile app and browser extension. You will not be able to add new logins or information. Autofill functionality will also stop working.
  • September 11, 2025:
The mobile app will stop working entirely.
  • October 28, 2025:
Dropbox Passwords will be completely shut down. At this point, you won’t be able to access or retrieve any stored passwords. All saved information will be permanently and securely deleted from Dropbox’s servers.

What Should You Do Now?

Dropbox recommends switching to another trusted password manager before the final shutdown. Alternatives include:

  • 1Password
  • Bitwarden
  • Dashlane
  • LastPass
  • Keeper

Make sure to export your passwords from Dropbox Passwords before the shutdown to avoid losing access. Most password managers offer import tools that make migration easy.

While the Dropbox Passwords shutdown may cause some inconvenience, users have time to prepare and choose a new solution. Don’t wait until the last minute—start exporting your data and setting up your new password manager today.
