Stakeholders make case for phone assembly plants in Nigeria

Several stakeholders have enjoined Nigerian government to pursue the setting up of phone assembly plants in the country. According to the Managing Director, Omatek Ventures, Florence Seriki, FG should adopt the road map of former president Olusegun Obasanjo who created Public Private Patnership (PPP) in the ICT sector which grows indigenous IT firms.

Industry analyst, Mr. Akin Akinbo, said: “I think that the number of phone importation into Nigeria is huge and it is enough to warrant the locating of assembly plants in the country by these phone manufacturers.”

Also commenting, the President of the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS), Deolu Ogunbanjo said Nigeria needs a deliberate policy to encourage CKD products, adding that “Not everything should be allowed to be imported into the country in a normal system.”

Also speaking, former scribe, Computers and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria (CAPDAN), Mr. John Oboro, tasked the government to grant tax waiver to phone manufacturers willing to set up assembly plants in Nigeria.
