SMWLagos: Citizens enjoined to participate in governance through social media

The highly anticipated Social Media Week Lagos (SMWLagos) officially kicked yesterday at the Landmark Center at Victoria Island in Lagos with Communication Technology minister, Omobola Johnson, and other stakeholders including Yemi Keri, Managing Director of Edo State Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and Ayodele Adewale, a former local government chairman speaking on the Citizens, Government and Technology.

The minister while participating at the session on Citizens, Government and Technology stressed the importance of the participation of citizens in governance through the use of technology mediums such as social media. The panelists agreed that application of modern technology can facilitate the current struggle against corruption at all levels in Nigeria.

In her remark, Mrs. Yemi Keri, Managing Director of Edo State Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) said the government of Edo state is pioneering an initiative that allows government to make data to be publicly available to members of the public through its online platform.

Another speaker at the session, Ayodele Adewale, who is the former chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area in Lagos asked stakeholders to ensure that the budget is made accessible to every citizen.

The conference continues today at different locations across Lagos state.
