News just came in that the Freedom 251, also known as the “$4 smartphone” will be ready for delivery soon. I still don’t know if this is for real but the CEO of the company that sells the device – Ringing Bells – says so. This smartphone was first mentioned by the company in February and a lot of people did not believe it. But now the company has decided to start shipping the device from the 30th of June to those who had pre-ordered online.

Even with the doubt and a police investigation, Ringing Bells continued with its plan and then gathered 70 million registrations for the device. But the company will only deliver about 200,000 units by the end of June and they plan to sell 200,000 units of the device every month.

The Freedom 251 is said to have a 4-inch screen and an 8MP camera on its back, and a 3.2MP front camera for selfies. An 1800mAh battery powers the 1.3GHz quad-core processor and 1GB RAM, and it also has 8GB storage for files. It is available in black and white.

It was company’s CEO- Mr. Goel’s dream to bring a low-cost smartphone for people who live below the poverty line in the country. He believes that the phone will help to connect the poor people, as part of Digital India campaign.
