You can now pay for fuel on MTN via mobile money

Telecoms company MTN has launched an app that allows its subscribers to pay for fuel across the country using mobile money. This service was launched by MTN Rwanda in partnership with Societe Petroliere (SP) which operates 25 SP petrol stations across the country.

Speaking at the launch, Norman Munyampundu, MTN business general manager, said the move is in line with government’s vision of transforming Rwanda into a cashless economy. Munyampundu said the new technological innovation will help improve MTN’s customer base and make it possible for one to pay for fuel using their mobile devices.

“The service will not only make it easier for customers to purchase fuel but will also be a free service and customers will not incur any transaction fees,” Munyampundu said.

The two companies will also be offering a Frw 10 discount per liter between July 16 and August 15.

Across Africa, the use of Mobile Money payments is on the rise and telecom companies have added multiple pay services, including in areas of electricity and water, school fees, TV, access funds from bank accounts, buying or sending airtime, and more.
