Remix Mini: World’s first Android PC is now available in Nigeria

Today (Monday), the world’s first Android PC, the Remix Mini, became officially available in Nigeria. Pitched as the world’s first true Android PC, the gadget is now available on DealDey.com.

The Remix Mini runs on the Remix operating system (OS) which is a productivity-focused version of Android. It has garnered huge interest and usage in the United States and Western Europe and was featured at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2016 and Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Remix Mini is being sold for N7999 even though the company, Jide Technology, said the standard retail price will be N30,000.

“This introductory offer shows Jide Technology’s commitment to lowering the barriers of access to computing for students, young professionals and small-business owners throughout Nigeria and emerging markets throughout the world,” Jide Technology said.

Jide Technology co-founder, David Ko, was in Google’s Emerging Markets team, seeing the transformative impact of the mobile internet throughout this continent as he led the Getting Nigerian Businesses Online project at Google for several years. Together with his two co-founders, who have a total of 26 years of experience at Google, they started re-engineering Android for productivity building Remix OS. Remix OS pushes the boundaries of mobile computing to empower its users to work and play seamlessly on the same device, optimized for today’s user habits, regardless of which computer platform you are coming from. Thus, it is pioneering productive computing on Android, which remains the most used mobile operating system in Nigeria, with more than 80% market share.

“The Remix Mini pushes the boundaries of Android by improving productivity for today’s ‘knowledge worker’, democratising access to information for students and levelling the global business playing field for entrepreneurs. Its energy efficiency brings 95% savings in electricity, particularly important during a period of frequent power blackouts,” the company stated.

Ko said: “Most people spend most of their computer time browsing the internet, sending emails and watching videos. Yet you have to spend more than N100,000 or more to buy a bulky, heavy, energy-inefficient computer running expensive software you barely use. By using the Remix Mini, which fits in the palm of your hand, you can make savings of money that you can redirect to investing on other needs for your business.

“We also understand that users in Nigeria spend most of their smartphone time on social media, social networking and instant messaging tools. However, they then have to switch back to their PCs to write a document, edit a spreadsheet or create a slideshow. Remix OS enables them to do all these tasks smoothly on one device. By having these productivity and entertainment apps open at the same time, you can multitask like never before.

“During our Remix Mini Kickstarter campaign, we received huge support from backers in the United States, Europe and Asia, yet we see the transformative potential of this Mini PC in emerging markets Through the direct feedback that we have received from that community of users, we have seen the huge potential of the Remix Mini to directly impact the lives of people in Nigeria.. We continue to learn how we can develop the operating system to improve the experience for these users. ”

The Remix Mini brings together the experience and functionality of a desktop computer with access to the entire ecosystem of 1.6 million Android apps. For anyone with a TV screen, a keyboard and mouse, the Remix Mini can be plugged in and played via HDMI port.
