WhatApps, Watzapp, Wazup – How Nigerians spell WhatsApp

Like we all know, WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform messaging application for smartphones. It uses the Internet to make voice calls, one to one video calls; send text messages, images, GIF, videos, documents, user location, audio files, phone contacts and voice notes to other users using standard cellular mobile numbers.

By February 2016, WhatsApp had a user base of over one billion, making it the most popular messaging application at the time. With its level of popularity in Nigeria, it’s kind of expected that most people know how to spell W-H-A-T-S-A-P-P. So we were really surprised when the TechCity crew was getting odd spellings from the streets. From WHAATTEAAPPS to WHATAPPS to WAZUP, it was really obvious many people have to brush up on the spelling.

The recent update of the messaging app, Whatsapp Stories, is another technique the company has brought up to lure and make us never leave the app. I will not lie, I’ve ditched Snapchat and Instagram Stories just to remain on Whatsapp. Err…Whatsapp is more popular, almost all my contacts use Whatsapp…not really my fault. Anyways, I do hope this new feature will make people glued to Whatsapp so they can at least learn the spelling. Seriously, no judgements; cos I almost made a mistake with the spelling just now. Lol…It’s really not our fault the spelling can be kind of confusing.
