The all New Nexus 7 by Google

A year after Google thrilled the market with the most affordable Nexus yet, the tech giant releases an updated, more robust version of the budget Android tablet, the new Nexus 7.

The all new Nexus 7 as Google calls it was launched in the US on the 30th of July and will be released in other markets in the coming weeks. It steps up to beat similar tablets like the iPad mini and Kindle Fire in both features and price point.

The new Nexus has placed itself in the premium category with its full HD screen, wireless charging and optional 4G LTE.

The tablet sports a 7 inch, 1200 x 1920 pixel screen that affords it a pixel density of 323ppi, miles ahead of the 216 ppi in last year’s model. Google claims this to be the world’s sharpest 7 inch tablet screen allowing you see tiny text and images sharper than ever before.

nexus 7Even with its full HD screen, the all new Nexus 7 manages to get slimmer than its predecessor. It has a width of 114mm and a thickness of 8.7mm compared with the 200mm width and 10.5mm thickness of the old Nexus 7. It is also 50g lighter so it should be easier to hold with one hand.

Beneath all the pizzazz at the surface, the all new Nexus 7 comes with a faster quad core processor, the Snapdragon S4 Pro running the latest Android 4.3 (Jelly bean) Operating system  with one extra gigabyte of RAM.

The new Nexus 7 was built for speed and functionality providing a pure Android experience while pushing out 2.3 million pixels for visually demanding HD apps, books, games and movies.

The new Nexus 7 comes with a non-removable 3950 mAh battery, a bit smaller than last year’s model but Google claims it lasts just as long with up to 9 hours of HD video playback and 10 hours of WiFi web browsing or e-reading.

Some features of the Nexus 7 stayed the same as it still has a 5MP rear facing camera and a 1.2MP front facing camera. The original Nexus 7 didn’t carry a front facing camera.

It also comes with a Gorilla Glass screen, stereo speakers and no microSD card slot for expanding the onboard storage, just like the previous version. However, you have the option of either 16GB or 32GB of onboard storage with the 32GB version having optional 4G connectivity so storing even more data in the cloud would be a breeze.

If you’re in the market for a new tablet or just need an upgrade that’s affordable, portable, and has all the features you’ll need then you can’t go wrong with the Nexus 7 2.
