Samsung to Unveil Curved Display Smartphone in October

Samsung has confirmed its plans to announce a curved display smartphone in Korea next month,  Reuters reports, making it the first company to explore new technology in the smartphone ecosystem.

“We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October,” Samsung’s mobile business head of strategic marketing D.J. Lee said on Wednesday at an event launching the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone in Seoul.

Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone, released in late 2011, also had a slightly curved screen, but in that case it was the glass, not the screen itself that was curved, which means we expect to see something much different.

Samsung also announced yesterday that it will offer two gold variants of the Galaxy S4.

Curved display is already commercially available in large-screen televisions. Samsung and its home rival LG Electronics Inc had started selling curved OLED TV sets this year.
