Microsoft Set To Phase Out Nokia

Microsoft is bent on phasing out Nokia and Windows phone brands. It’s sad to know that one of my favorite phone brands – Nokia, would no longer be in existence in a very short time.

When I hear ‘’Nokia’’ I think of how old I am and how many Nokia phones I enjoyed back in the day (that is before I made the switch to android). I always felt Nokia sold themselves short when they allowed Microsoft possess them with the Windows OS. If Nokia had been bought by Google or ran the Android OS, they would have had a chance to make waves in the market. But now they are going to be phased out; because the Lumia series was Microsoft’s attempt at reviving Nokia sales. An attempt that didn’t not quite achieve the targeted outcome.

“As part of our phased transition, we will drop the manufacturer name from product references during the Holiday campaign,” an internal memo read. The Nokia Corporation in Finland has become Microsoft Mobile – which I believe is too geeky a name (c’mon this isn’t 1999 when mobile phone manufacturers had weird names). Windows phones would be known as Windows with Lumia as the branding for models.

Microsoft bought over Nokia for 7.2 billion US dollars in 2013 yet the once dominant player in the mobile phone industry has recorded a steady decline in its market share since 2010. Was the acquisition move really a smart one for Nokia?
