Lagos Start-Up Week: The Next Big thing in the African Startup Ecosystem

In the quest to develop the continent, more businesses are springing up to respond to the growing needs of the economy. These businesses which are better referred to as start-ups have gotten the attention of a number of investors who wish to contribute to the growth of these start-ups leading to events like the Social Media Week, Mobile West Africa and Demo Africa. Now, the next big thing to blow up the minds of start-ups is the 2015 Lagos Start-up Week.

Start-up Week was developed by a non-profit organisation known as the Entrepreneurship Advocate Up Global to celebrate the achievements of entrepreneurial communities in cities across the globe. This year, the organisers have put together an African edition which is expected to take place in the second fastest growing city in Africa, Lagos, Nigeria.

Though the schedule is yet to be known, the organisers intend to hold the event in the month of July and have said that they expect well over 1,000 Entrepreneurs and small business owners to participate in the 5day  event consisting of panel discussions, workshops, pitches (for entrepreneurs seeking funding), alongside Several networking opportunities. Visitors are expected from all over Africa as well as from countries such as the United Kingdom (UK), United States, Spain and Switzerland amongst others.  Event speakers and panellist include some of the most amazing start-up founders, thought leaders, industry experts, community supporters and investors in town

According to a member of the organizing committee, Mr. Olumide Olayinka, “The worlds focus is on Africa at the moment with Nigeria being a pivot point for investment activities in the continent. Africa is certainly rising and Nigeria appears to be leading this rebirth. If you are interested in checking out or getting plugged into the Lagos start-up scene, there isn’t a better time to come to Lagos than during Lagos Start-up Week.”   He further noted that the event will give the knowledge, insight and relevant contacts needed to start a business in Africa, expand a current venture and better understand the latest trends in African markets.

Start-up week is a Catalyst for new opportunities. When you bring dedicated entrepreneurs with good ideas together with mentors and investors, Great things are going to happen.” Said Andrew Hyde founder of Start-up week

Whilst the schedule and events are still being built up, you can take a sneak peek here.
