Nigerian health startup Kangpe, has won the Nigerian leg of Seedstars World, the global seed-stage startup competition for emerging markets and fast-growing startup scenes. The competition featured a total of 8 startups.
Kangpe is a health platform that wants to put a doctor in the pocket of every African. More than 100 startups applied for the competition out of which 8 were selected. Online tutoring platform, Tuteria while Davtonlearn, an online/cloud based video learning startup, came third. The competition was held at the recently opened Seedspace Lagos and featured disruptive tech, inspirational discussions and networking sessions.
Kangpe’s founder, Dr Femi Kuti during his pitch said since they launched, they’ve generated US$10,000 in revenue. At the competition, the startup is seeking US$1 million to expand across Francophone Africa. He pitched before a jury which included Simeon Ononobi, Benjamin Benaim, Juliet Nwanguma and Tidjane Deme – which subsequently crowned Kangpe as the most promising seed-stage startup of Seedstars Lagos 2016.
By winning the competition, Kangpe has now booked a place at Seedstars Summit holding in March next year at Switzerland. According to the organizers, the Summit is a week-long training program with the opportunity to meet the other winners from across the world, as well as investors and mentors.
The final day of the Summit will see all the startups pitch in front of an audience of 1,000 attendees with the possibility of winning up to the US$1 million equity investment.
Seedstars World Lagos leg was supported by Omidyar Network, Seedspace, the Swiss Embassy, Orange, PayU, The Jacobs Foundation and several others. The next stop for the African tour of the competition is in Accra, Ghana’s capital city.
