Facebook rewarded a 10-year-old for identifying a security bug on Instagram

Finnish 10-year-old – Jani, won himself $10,000 for letting Facebook know about a security flaw on Instagram in January. The bug Jani found allowed him to delete written content on Instagram and he proved this to Facebook by deleting a comment the company posted on a test site.

A Facebook spokesperson told Forbes that the bug was patched in February and Jani was rewarded in March.

His reward is part of Facebook’s Bug Bounty Program set up to reward security researchers that report any issues they spot with the companies platforms. The program then rewards each researcher based on the risk such a bug possess to the platform. So far, Facebook has gifted over $4.3 million to over 800 researchers from various countries.

This feat has made the 10-year old prodigy the youngest person to receive Facebook’s Bug Bounty as he ousted a 13-year old recipient to clinch this spot.
