Facebook Lite update brings video playing capability

About a year ago, Facebook released a smaller and lighter version of its mobile app, Facebook Lite which is optimized to work smoothly on entry level Android smartphones and in places with 2G connections or limited internet connection.

The less than 1MB sized app does well to give you a decent Facebook experience, well, maybe not the whole experience you get from the space-consuming Facebook app. The recent update to the Facebook Lite now add video playing capability, something that has been a tradeoff for people using the app over time.

The video now appears in-stream with video size displayed (used to be video thumbnail) but it doesn’t play instream as obtainable on the main Facebook app, a tap on the video opens it up and it plays with minimum buffering.

While the design and experience on the Facebook app still remains basic, it still permits posting status updates, sharing and liking post.

The addition of video playing capability is a big upgrade for the app which uses less data and works in all network conditions. The app has over 100 million downloads on Play Store and am sure this upgrade will encourage users like me who are tired of Facebook trying to force app downloads down our throat, quickly delete the Facebook app.

Facebook Lite is just light and allows you do everything within the same app instead of downloading separate apps to experience Facebook and send Facebook messages. As if that is not enough, the regular Facebook app drains battery and uses up about 300MB of memory of the phone…. Good riddance
